Martí Batres, Head of Government of Mexico City, has announced the results of the public consultation “The City of Heroines”, aimed at renaming streets and avenues in honor of outstanding women.

Rita Guerrero, former vocalist of Santa Sabina, was the most voted figure, followed by other prominent women in fields such as art, science and social activism.

The consultation also included names suggested by the population, which will be considered in the following stages of the process.

According to Batres, the platform received a total of 25,411 votes since its opening on March 8.

This initiative aims to replace street names currently dedicated to figures such as Gustavo Díaz Ordaz and Antonio López de Santa Anna, by names of women activists, scientists and artists. Among the notable ones are Rita Guerrero, Adela Salazar, Benita Galeana, and other personalities such as Elvia Carrillo Puerto, Remedios Varo and Rosario Castellanos.

The Head of Government highlighted that the consultation received active participation from citizens, evidencing an interest in honoring the legacy of women who have contributed significantly to society. The platform will remain open to receive additional opinions and suggestions.

The licensed senator mentioned that they have the first 10 names and in the coming days the process of change will begin in the streets of Mexico City.

In addition, Rita Guerrero was selected Adela Salazar, Benita Galena, Elvia Carrillo Puerto, Remedios Varo, Rosario Castellanos, Adela Velarde, Valentina Ramírez Avitia, Matilde Montoya and Elena Garro.

“The case of Rita Guerrero, singer, artist, activist, a very creative woman and, furthermore, with a lot of empathy with social movements, with young people, and with several generations that have fought in these years,” said Batres.

“There are other women who follow, who are on the platform, who are Margarita Magón, Leonora Carrington, Rosa Luxemburgo, Chavela Vargas, Pita Amor, Roberta ‘La Tita’ Avendaño, Gertrudis Bocanegra, Amparo Ochoa, Leona Vicario, Josefa Ortiz, Emma Goldman, Margarita Neri, Mercedes Sosa, Ana María Rico Galán, Nina Simone, Clara Zetkin and Aretha Franklin”

The street renaming process will be carried out by the Women’s Secretariat in collaboration with the Culture Secretariat, with the aim of revaluing the legacy of women in the history of Mexico City.

For its part, the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing will begin the necessary technical and legal procedures to implement the name changes.

This project represents a significant step towards gender equality in public spaces, by recognizing and making visible the contribution of women to the life and culture of the city.
