(News updated at 1:07 pm with information from the Finnish police about the death of a child and the person responsible for the shooting)

A 12-year-old boy shot several children this morning at his school in Vantaa, north of Helsinki, killing one and seriously injuring two others, Finnish police revealed, cited by AFP.

The security force was sent to the school, which has 800 students aged between 7 and 15, shortly after 9am local time (6am GMT), and ended up arresting the suspect around an hour later.

“Today, after 9 o’clock in the morning, a shooting occurred at Viertola primary school in Vantaa (…) during which a sixth-grader died,” said Ilkka Koskimäki, a police official, at a press conference . Death was immediate. “Two children were also seriously injured,” he added.

The arrest of the young suspect, who attended the same school, “proceeded calmly”, said the police, adding that he was in possession of a firearm. An investigation into murder and attempted murder was then opened.

The teenager will not be arrested because he is under 15 years old, said Markku Särkkä, another police officer. After interrogation, he will be handed over to social services.
