Elections 2024: Alda Pacheco, candidate for deputy in Guanajuato, is attacked
At least five injured police officers, one of them seriously, have been injured in the National Palace of Haitiwhich was attacked by armed men led by ‘Barbecue‘ this Monday. The situation remains tense with intense shootings in the area and confrontations between gang members and the Police in the main public square of Port-au-Prince, Champs de Mars, near the National Palace.
Los attackersbelonging to the ‘Vivre Ensemble’ (‘Living Together’) coalition, led by the powerful Jimmy Cherizier, alias ‘Barbecue‘, they managed to set fire to an armored vehicle of the National Police near the National Palace.
These gangs control most of Prince Port and had threatened to take the National Palace, an objective they attempted unsuccessfully in March.
This attack comes after days of relative calm, breaking the tense tranquility that had prevailed. Shootings on Champs de Mars and the discovery of bodies in Pétion-Ville indicate an increase in violence in Haiti since the end of February, with attacks on institutions, companies, private properties and prisons, resulting in the escape of thousands of prisoners, including members of armed gangs.
Despite the recent violence, current levels are below those recorded in early March. Haiti awaits the implementation of the Transitional Presidential Council to elect a new prime minister and prepare for presidential elections.
The current Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, who is out of the country, has announced his resignation once the council is operational.
