“An increase in the price of coal supplied by Mini “Maritsa Iztok” will lead to unfavorable circumstances for the plant, for Galabovo and the heating plants supplied with fuel from us. For this reason, we appeal to all the authorities responsible for preventing this from happening: Do not raise the price of coal! This can destroy the sector once and for all!” This is stated in an official letter of the Brickell TPP sent to the Ministry of Energy, the Commission for Energy and Water Regulation, the National Assembly and Bulgarian Energy Holding.

The headquarters indicate that the state mining company has requested an increase in the price of coal by about 30%. “Brickell” is one of the biggest customers of the state mine. In their letter, the owners explain that they understand the dire situation in which Mini “Maritsa Iztok” is in, but they are puzzled as to how such a decision is made in a situation in which there is already a shutdown of coal power and mass layoffs of specialists. The letter makes it clear that in such a situation, the increase in coal prices could practically destroy the entire sector.

The plant said the series of negative events caused by the war in Ukraine, the subsequent energy crisis and the chaos in the strategic planning for the development of the energy sector related to the Green Deal affected not only the mining company, but also the coal-fired power plants. In their letter, they state that they are also negatively affected by high inflation, which has led to an increase in production costs in all branches of the economy.

“Brickel” failed to receive the required revenue from the sales of electricity on the BNEB platform during the current regulatory period. The reason is the collapse in stock exchange prices compared to the estimated market price approved by KEVR,” the headquarters emphasize.

From there, they explain that in the event that a 30% increase in the price of mined coal is allowed, the “Brickel” TPP will find itself in a trap.

“On the one hand, there are the number of concluded contracts for the sale of production from processed coal, which we buy from the state mines and the low market prices on the energy exchange, on the other hand, there is the request for an increase in the raw material,” the plant explains.

“Brickel” TPP is adamant that they will be forced to terminate the contracts they have signed with their contractors and to review the overall investment program regarding the processing of coal from Mini Maritsa Iztok, which will lead to a reduction in the amount of their requests to the state mines .

In the letter, addressed to all competent institutions directly involved in the “Energy” sector, “Brickel” expresses the hope that a statesmanlike decision will be made, without aggravating the state of the industry by further increasing the cost of electricity and heat production from coal.
