The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution in its session that ended yesterday. The author of this document was MP Peter Omtzigt from the Netherlands. The resolution was related to the Maltese journalist Dafna Caruana Galicia, who was killed as a result of an assassination attempt. The issues related to this murder were listed one by one in the resolution. The writings of the Maltese authorities about the corrupt relations with Azerbaijan were specially mentioned, and the transfer of more than 1 million money from the company of one of the members of the ruling family of Azerbaijan to the company of the wife of the Prime Minister of Malta was also mentioned.
The resolution stated that the Maltese authorities did not seriously investigate the fact of the journalist’s murder. During the discussion of the resolution, the deputies representing Azerbaijan expressed strong objections to some parts of the document. It was evident from the speeches of the deputies from Azerbaijan that they were very worried about the mention of the corrupt relations of the Azerbaijani authorities with the Maltese authorities in the resolution.
The resolution demanded the most serious investigation into the case of the murdered journalist. The document was adopted by a large majority – 72 in favor and 18 against. The entire delegation of Azerbaijan voted against the resolution.
