TAIPEI.- The strong earthquake that shook Taiwan early on Wednesday and that left at least seven dead and 771 injuredaccording to the fire department, was felt throughout the island and caused great damagesuch as the total or partial collapse of buildings and other constructions.
The Taiwanese government agency responsible for measuring the detection, study and measurement of earthquakes reported a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale for tremor, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) placed it at 7.5 and indicated that it had its epicenter 18 kilometers south of the Taiwanese city of Hualien, with a depth of 34.8 kilometers.
In the capital, Taipei, tiles fell from the oldest buildings and schools evacuated their students to sports fields, equipping them with yellow safety helmets. Later, a five-story building in Hualien County, near the epicenter at sea, was left inclined at a 45 degree angle on its demolished first floor.
