This time, ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’, which tells a more mature growth story while searching for a successor, will be released on the 10th. Can this be a consolation to the lonely hearts of Korean audiences who sent Fu Bao to China?
‘Kung Fu Panda 4’, which returns after eight years, tells the story of Po (Jack Black), who lived peaceful days as a dragon warrior, when he receives orders from his teacher Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) to find a successor. Po, who went through difficult training and was reborn as a dragon warrior who is loved and respected by all animals, does not want to give up his position as a warrior easily. Meanwhile, he hears that a new villain, Chameleon (Viola Davis), has appeared, and sets out on a journey to kill him. In the process, he meets Jen (Aquefina), a talented person with a secret, and unexpected things happen.
There is a lot of global interest as it is the sequel to the series released by DreamWorks Animation Studio after 8 years. The Kung Fu Panda series was a box office hit, grossing $2 billion (approximately 2.7 trillion won) worldwide. It received great love in Korea as well. ‘Kung Fu Panda 1’ (2008) recorded 4.73 million viewers, ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’ (2011) 5 million, and ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ (2015) recorded 4 million, with a cumulative number of visitors of over 13 million. and was a box office success. The fourth film surpassed ‘Dune: Part 2’ and ranked first at the box office immediately after its release in North America last month. Part 1 depicts Po realizing his potential and being reborn as a kung fu master, Part 2 depicts Po finding true peace of mind, and Part 3 depicts Po discovering the importance of being himself, while Part 4 depicts Po letting go of his greed and prejudice and pursuing his true self. It contains the growth of Poe as he searches for a successor.

What is most pleasing is the voice acting of ‘The Eternal Poe’ actor Jack Black. His playful yet powerful voice summons the ‘po’ of memories. The witty lines are so synchronized that it’s hard to tell if they’re Black’s ad-libs or real lines. The new character, the fox ‘Jen’, was played by Aquefina, a Korean-American. Rapper-turned-actor Aquo Fina has established herself as a new blue chip in voice acting in Hollywood with her unique huskiness. She recently received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Scuttle the Seagull in ‘The Little Mermaid’ (2023) and Chump the New York Pigeon in ‘Into the World’ (2024).
However, many series fans will be disappointed that the ‘Invincible Five’ consisting of the tiger Tigris, the monkey Monkey, the crane Crane, the viper Viper, and the praying mantis Mantis did not appear. As the new character Jen’s importance grew, they naturally disappeared from the movie. However, many characters from the previous work, such as Tai Lung and Kai, appear to assuage the disappointment. The new villain Chameleon may be small, but he is more cunning and powerful than any other character in the series. The appearance of the chameleon is even more impressive with the addition of music by film score master Hans Zimmer.
Meanwhile, this series ranked first at the box office in 26 countries around the world. In North America, it ranked first in the box office upon release and remained at the top for two consecutive weeks.
