At least three missing after avalanche in Switzerland

An avalanche hits a tourist area in Switzerland this Monday, leaving a balance of at least three people missing under the snow. It is presumed that the victims could have died; Rescue efforts are still continuing.

The events were recorded this Monday, in one of the main ski and mountaineering resorts in the town of Zermatt, in southern Switzerland, where dozens of people were skiing.

A video taken in Riffelberg was spread through social networks, showing the exact moment in which the snow avalanche falls while several people are skiing trying to escape.

According to the first reports shared by local media, the Valais cantonal police confirmed that three people were missing in the snow, which is why they are presumed dead.

In addition to the fatalities, the avalanche also left several material damages in one of the main ski resorts in said region of Switzerland.

Currently, rescue efforts continue, however, the three victims have not been located and it is feared that the operation will be suspended overnight, so they will resume until Tuesday.

Unofficially, it is presumed that the abundance of fresh snow and hurricane-force winds recorded in recent days in the southern switzerland They would have been the cause of the avalanche that hit the region.

This tragic event adds to the 12 avalanches that have already occurred in the country during the winter of 2023/24, leaving 14 people dead.
