A bipartisan bill to ban the use of the social network TikTok was approved this Wednesday by the US House of Representatives with 352 votes in favor and 65 against.

The legislators’ proposal highlights that the decision was driven because the data collected by TikTok could be useful to China to affect its national security, mainly through disinformation campaigns or for the identification of intelligence targets.

American media outlets insisted that the measure has the objective of prompting the parent company of the social network to sell the platform after accusations of its alleged direct relationship with the Chinese government and its Communist Party.

Now, the legislation will reach the US Senate where it will face some key figures in that country’s politics who oppose taking such a radical measure. If the law is supported there, it will be up to President Joe Biden to sign it.

As announced by the White House after the victory in the House, Biden will enact this legal regulation, officially called the “Protecting Americans from Requests Controlled by Foreign Rivals Act.”

The law would give Biden the power to designate other applications as “a threat to national security” if they are considered under the control of countries that the US opposes for various reasons.

Some of the senators who have expressed their support for the law are Democrat Mark Warner, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Republican Marco Rubio.

“We are encouraged by today’s strong bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives and we hope to work together so that this bill is approved by the Senate,” both politicians said in a statement cited by the newspaper La Opinión.
