With one car you should charge on the left and with another car on the right. Why does this sometimes differ? The mobility organization VAB advises how you can see which side the tank is on.

Whether the tank cap is on the left or right usually depends on which side of the road you drive in the country where the manufacturer is from. For example, a European car brand usually places the fuel cap on the right side, while Asian cars do the exact opposite.

In modern cars, however, this “logic” often does not apply. Many brands are part of a large international group, which breaks the left/right rule. It is also possible for companies from a right-hand drive country to still put the fuel cap on the left, as the brand primarily sells cars in left-hand drive areas. There are even differences within a manufacturer. The Peugeot 208 has a cap on the left, while the larger 308 has a cap on the right.

But how do you know if you should stand on the left or the right to easily reach the gas or diesel tank? It’s very simple: the arrow on the dashboard, on the fuel level icon, shows from which side the fuel should be filled.
