The militaries of the Republic of Korea, the United States and Japan held the first trilateral air exercise this year southeast of the South Korean island of Jeju in connection with the deployment of the US B-52H strategic bomber. The joint maneuvers took place in the area where the air defense identification zones of South Korea and Japan intersect. It is noted that they were carried out with the aim of increasing deterrence potential in response to the growing nuclear missile threat from the DPRK.
Seoul noted that these trilateral exercises were held in accordance with the agreements of the 2023 Camp David summit. The current maneuvers were the first this year. South Korea deployed F-15K fighters, and the American side also used F-16 fighters. Japan – F-2 aircraft.
The Republic of Korea, the United States and Japan intend to continue to strengthen cooperation to respond to threats from the DPRK, the Department of Defense said in a statement.
According to Seoul, on April 2, North Korea launched a medium-range ballistic missile towards the Sea of Japan.
