Azerbaijani Finance Minister Samir Sharifov met with Yevgeny Zhukov, Director General of the Department for Central and West Asia of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), who is visiting the country.

According to Day.Az, at the meeting consultations were held on the current state and future areas of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the ADB, and future lending programs for projects based on the sustainability of economic development in the country and government priorities were considered.

S. Sharifov said that expanding the use of “green” energy sources has been identified as a new priority direction of the national energy policy: “We believe that the decision to hold COP29 in Baku also reflects global support for Azerbaijan’s green energy policy.”

The minister also provided extensive information about the work carried out within the framework of the Strategy for Social and Economic Development of Azerbaijan for 2022-2026, work on accelerated restoration and creation, which will ensure the “Great Return” to the territories liberated from occupation. The government’s interest in cooperation with ADB on transport and railway infrastructure projects, in the field of renewable energy was noted, and the feasibility of holding discussions in this direction with relevant government agencies was brought to attention.

Noting that this year marks 25 years since the start of cooperation between the Azerbaijani government and the ADB, S. Sharifov said that over these years of successful partnership, Azerbaijan has gained strategic support from the bank in all areas of development.

In turn, E. Zhukov wished the government success in its activities and emphasized that ADB is interested in expanding ties with Azerbaijan, in particular, expressed interest in providing financial and technical support for the implementation of new projects in accordance with the government’s priorities. He noted that work is currently underway to develop the next three-year partnership strategy between ADB and Azerbaijan.

Appreciating the selection of Azerbaijan as the country that will host COP29 this November, the ADB representative said that this is the result of the successful green energy policies implemented in the country, and expressed readiness to provide the necessary technical and organizational support for the successful hosting of this prestigious Events.

During the meeting, the parties also discussed other issues of mutual interest.
