At the Ganja State Philharmonic named after Fikret Amirov, within the framework of the project “Our Musical Identity” (Musiqi kimliyimiz), an evening was held dedicated to the work of the outstanding representative of Azerbaijani ashug art, master of words and saz, Ashug Alesker, Day.Az reports.

From February 29 to March 2, within the framework of the “Our Musical Identity” project, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan jointly with the Ganja-Dashkesan Regional Department of Culture, the Ganja State Philharmonic named after Fikret Amirov and the Union of Ashugs of Azerbaijan, concert programs of ashugs were presented.

At the opening of the scientific conference “Azerbaijani Ashugs”, the director of the Ganja State Philharmonic, Honored Artist Ramil Gasimov noted the importance of implementing the project in order to promote our historical traditions and transfer the subtleties of Ashig art to today’s generation.

As part of the project, evenings were held dedicated to ashug art and epics with a centuries-old history. Ashug art, which is the basis of national folk art, is included in the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The goal of the project is to promote national values ​​among young people and present the ancient heritage to the general public.

Chairman of the Union of Ashugs of Azerbaijan, Honored Artist Maharram Gasimli noted that this project, carried out for the first time, is a great contribution to ashug art and creativity. The conference participants made presentations on the life and work of various representatives of ashug art.

A literary and artistic evening was also held dedicated to the work of the outstanding representative of Ashug art, Ashug Alesker. Chairman of “Dədə Ələsgər Ocağı” Khatai Aleskerli expressed gratitude to the organizers of the project.

Ashug Alesker (Alesker Alimamed oglu, March 21, 1821 – March 7, 1926) is one of the most famous Azerbaijani ashug-storytellers of the 19th – early 20th centuries.

Thanks to his bright talent, passionate, uncompromising works, he managed to rise to the top of Azerbaijani ashug poetry. Ashug Alesker wrote poems, created ashug melodies on them, and himself masterfully performed them on the saz, and was fluent in the forms of ashug poetry. The themes of Ashug Alesker’s poetry are varied. Social motives intensified over time in his work. Ashug Alesker was the creator and bright leader of the Goychi Ashug School in Azerbaijan. His teacher was the most famous poet of that time – Ashug Aly.

Ashug Alasker’s repertoire consisted of many classical dastans and ashug melodies, the essence of which was to describe the plight of the working people, the revolutionary events of those years, scenes from peasant life and the beauty of nature. The theme of love and friendship occupies an important place in the work of Ashug Alesker. The world of his lyrics is rich and varied. Ashuga Alesker’s lyrical goshma, soulful love poetry, are also varied.
