Finland closed its 1,340-kilometer land border with Russia last December after about 1,300 illegal immigrants without proper documents or visas had crossed the border since September. It was an unusually large number of illegal immigrants.

Helsinki accuses Moscow of facilitating the mass exodus of illegal immigrants to Finland, and the government has said there is no sign Moscow will stop.

Since December, Finland has extended the closure of border points several times, the last time until April 14. “The decision will remain in place until further notice, but no longer than necessary,” the government said.

In order to prevent the influx of migrants by sea routes, from April 15, “sea traffic border crossing points in Hapasari, the port of Nuijama and Santio will be closed to recreational vessels”. Starting from April 15, asylum can only be requested at other sea border crossing points or airports.

Finland’s border is the external border of the European Union (EU) in the north, and Finland forms an important part of NATO’s north-eastern flank.
