“Yes, STT has started a pre-trial investigation regarding the payments of Klaipėda district municipality members,” confirmed STT representative Dovilė Andrijauskaitė to Elta on Thursday.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted in order to assess whether there was no misuse of benefits for members of the Klaipėda District Municipal Council of the previous term for financial or personal gain.
ELTA reminds that in the spring, after publicist Andriis Tapinas initiated an investigation into the absorption of municipal politicians’ funds by “Skaidrina” and as a result of a scandal about the possible abuse of office funds by politicians, a number of municipalities came under the scrutiny of law enforcement.
The STT is currently conducting 27 pre-trial investigations into the possible improper use of self-government funds by 26 municipalities: Vilnius (2 pre-trial investigations), the cities of Šiauliai, Panevėžys and the cities of Alytus, Utena, Ukmergė, Kretinga, Ignalina, Mažeikių, Šilutė, Jonava, Lazdijai, Pasvali, Prienė, Telšiai, Radviliškis, Joniškis, Tauragė, Zarasai, Akmenė districts and Birštonas, Marijampolė, Neringa, Pagėgiai, Druskininkai municipalities.
