The challenge of mental health

“How to combat the stigma of mental health and bring organizations in the sector closer to young people?”was the dilemma that Nel González Zapicopresident of SALUD MENTAL ESPAÑA, said during the presentation to the group of young people.

The president of the Confederation presented the work of the MENTAL HEALTH SPAIN association movement and gave a brief tour of the recent history of mental health. González highlighted that75% of people with mental health problems claim to have felt discriminated against in some area of their life”and explained that “stigma is reproduced in the family, educational, penitentiary, police, judicial spheres, in the executive and legislative powers, and in public administrations. And of course, also in healthcare”.

“We still have a long way to go to perceive people with mental health problems without prejudice. Thanks to young people, today there is more and better talk about this social problem. They are an example of how to integrate mental health into everyday conversation, without taboos.“, he highlighted González.

The president recognized the challenge for SALUD MENTAL ESPAÑA to be a reference for the younger population: “We can be a place of welcome and support, but we lack tools to reach youth”. “For all these reasons, we ask you to join this challenge. Help us answer questions like What can we do from the movement to reach the young population?”González stated to the attendees.

Eight teams will work on the challenges over the next three months

To develop the projects with which to solve them, the group of 60 young people will be divided into 8 teams, which will have the support of Álvaro Carrera as a mentor and different guides with extensive professional experience in the different specialties, who were also presented at the event. :

  • Environment: Amaia Rodriguez, Maria Riberas y Gloria Gubianas.
  • Inclusion: Javier Roldan y Javier Goizueta.
  • Technology: Jesus Daughters y Xavi Gonzalez.
  • Mental health: Izanami Martínez y Cristina Mateo.

“We firmly believe in the potential of young people. Through BYG we are committed to helping them generate positive impact and offering them all the necessary tools so that they dare to change things. Because we have come to this world to leave our mark”he claimed Ana Ruiz-Canela, director of BYG. For her part, Laura Castillageneral director of Youth of the Community of Madrid, pointed out that the BYG professional accelerator is “a great opportunity to learn about the concerns and realities of other young people so that together they can think and get excited.”

From this moment on, a period of three months of intense activity begins for the young participants, during which they will receive online training that is fully compatible with studies and work, aimed at supporting them in solving problems, working as a team, discover new methodologies, develop their capacity for innovation with purpose, scale their projects to larger dimensions and introduce them to dynamics of networking with reference professionals.

The final touch to the program will arrive the weekend of June 21 to 23 with the celebration of the BYG campus that takes place every year at the Telefónica headquarters in Buitrago de Lozoya, where young people will live a training experience in community while they conclude their proposals, before being presented to the jury of experts who will be in charge to choose the winning project.
