South Africa international and 2020 Tokyo Olympics competitor Luke Fleurs died on April 4 in Johannesburg, his club Kaizer Chiefs announced on social media X (formerly Twitter).

According to the police, the 24-year-old defender was shot at a gas station when an attempt was made to steal his car, a red Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI.

“Luke Flers was tragically killed in an incident in Johannesburg. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time,” Kaizer Chiefs said in a statement.

The attackers and now the murderers fled the scene in L. Fleurs’ car, and the police started an investigation into the murder and the car theft, said Mavela Masondo, a spokesperson for the Johannesburg police. The search for the suspects continued on Friday, but there were no tangible results.

“The suspects pointed a firearm at the football player and dragged him out of the vehicle. After that, one of them shot the victim in the upper body. “One suspect drove away in the football player’s car, followed by an accomplice in a white BMW,” said M. Masondo.

Zizi Kodwa, the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture of the Republic of South Africa, expressed his condolences.

“I am saddened that another person’s life has been cut short due to a violent crime. I am thinking about the L. Fleurs family, the Kaizer Chiefs team and the entire South African football community,” wrote Z. Kodwa on social media.

L. Fleurs previously played for the country’s under-23 national team, representing South Africa at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The Kaizer Chiefs team, in which the deceased fought, is one of the most famous teams in the state, which has won the championship title 53 times.

Fleurs was one of more than 1,000 people who fell victim to fatal carjackings in South Africa, which has one of the world’s highest homicide rates.

The latest official crime statistics for October-December last year showed that a total of 5,973 car thefts were registered in the country.

According to Gun Free South Africa, a non-profit organization that advocates for the reduction of gun violence, 31 people are killed by guns every day in the Republic of South Africa.
