Stavroula Kourakou-Dragona: The “lady of the vines” has died

The first woman with a diploma of oenologist in Europe, she defended and registered 27 Greek appellations of origin and was decorated by France, Spain and Italy

Yesterday she passed away Stavroula Kourakou-Dragonathe “Lady of the Vines”, the great lady of Greek wine.

Stavroula Kourakou, who passed away in old age 96 years oldhad a very strong first on her resume: in 1979 she was unanimously elected president of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), making her the first woman to hold this position.

He defended and registered 27 Greek appellations of origin with the newest one of Vinsanto, and was decorated by France, Spain and Italy. He wrote several books on wine, which have been translated into English and German.

She was the undisputed “Lady of the vines”, as she was called in 1979 by the then editor-in-chief of “Kathimerini”, Kyriakos Korovilas.

The Minister of Rural Development and Food, Lefteris Avgenakis, regarding the loss of Stavroula Kourakou-Dragonas, stated the following:

“Yesterday, Stavroula Kourakou-Dragona, the “Lady of the Vineyards”, the great lady of Greek wine, passed away. A brilliant scientist who highlighted the history of Greek wine, leading the way with her articles and also the great scientific and literary work her.

Its significant and at the same time leading participation in the events of the wine industry for over half a century was what shaped the edifice of modern wine Greece.
Her iconic work is difficult to describe in a few words.

The first woman with a degree in oenology in Europe, she was, among other things – and after being elected popularly – President of the International Organization of Vine and WineDirector for 20 years of the Wine Institute in Greece, President of European Union Committees on wine legislation.

It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to this emblematic personality of Greek wine, who leaves behind a great legacy of ethics, dedication and love for research and knowledge about the wine he loved so much.”
