Bonghwa-gun will vaccinate cattle and goats with foot-and-mouth disease vaccines in the first half of 2024. Bonghwa-gun announced that it will conduct ‘bovine and goat foot-and-mouth disease vaccine vaccination in the first half of 2024’ for four weeks from April 1 to 28 to preemptively respond to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease and maintain a clean area.

The vaccination target is a total of 729 cattle and goat farms (622 cattle, 28,500 head / 107 goats, 3,300 head), 31,800 head, and the foot-and-mouth disease vaccine will be vaccinated in the first half of the year.

In order to prevent the occurrence of foot-and-mouth disease, a type 1 livestock infectious disease, and to solve problems such as farmers’ negligence in vaccination and the occurrence of missed vaccinations due to differences in vaccination timing for each individual, mass vaccination has been carried out twice a year since September 2017 (4 times in the first half of the year). It is implemented on a regular basis (Monday, October in the second half of the year).

In addition, the antibody positive rate of farms is checked through antibody testing while conducting a simultaneous vaccination period for cattle and goats in the first and second half of each year. The standard for antibody positive rate is 80% or more for cattle and 60% or more for goats. Farmers whose test results fall below the standard will receive 10 million won. Farmers need to be careful as the following fines are imposed and re-vaccination orders and re-inspection within 4 weeks are required.

Small farms with less than 50 head of cattle and goats receive vaccines purchased in bulk from the military, and 4 airborne personnel visit to provide vaccination support for free. Full-time cattle farmers raising more than 50 head of cattle purchase vaccines from the Andong Bonghwa Livestock Cooperative and provide self-vaccination. The military supports 50% of the cost of purchasing vaccines.

In addition, stress relievers will be supplied to minimize damage to farms due to stress occurring during vaccination, and an airlift doctor and two capture personnel will be provided to goat farms to increase vaccination efficiency.

Lee Seung-ho, head of the Agriculture, Government and Livestock Division, said, “As foot-and-mouth disease can reoccur at any time if vaccination is neglected, as occurred in North Chungcheong Province in May last year, we ask for the active participation of livestock farmers to ensure thorough vaccination without missing individuals. .” he said.
