In the ten days leading up to March 17, the volume of Russian diesel fuel loaded into tankers averaged 6.2 million barrels, the highest on record since 2017. Bloomberg writes about this with reference to calculations by the analytical company Kpler, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.

The agency finds it difficult to explain what caused the local record, but notes that Russia now stores more fuel at sea than at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic or a year ago, when price ceilings for petroleum products and the EU embargo came into force.

The publication recalls that in recent months the United States has sharply increased its activity in monitoring the implementation of the ceiling on prices for oil and petroleum products, which is why many ships and intermediaries that were involved in organizing supplies were subject to sanctions.

Therefore, one of the assumptions is that Russian companies cannot find buyers for fuel, but limited reservoirs on land force them to use a fleet.
