The family’s new villa near Prague could be envied by many. Standing on a plot of four thousand square meters, it has an interior made of natural materials and glass walls that, like a membrane, divide the outside world and what is inside without creating clear barriers. “The space flows undisturbed from the interior to the exterior, because as we know, living does not end at home,” say the authors of the villa.

The so-called Garden villa in the Central Bohemian region was designed by the architects from Ateliér Kunc. Like a snake, it crawls through the garden, creating unexpectedly beautiful moments, both outdoors and indoors. “The pleasant atmosphere of the interior is also created by the fine natural materials used. We designed oak floors, beige screeds, travertine or honey slatted ceilings. We strove for an unobtrusively beautiful architecture in which to live wonderfully,” says lead architect Michal Kunc.

The bungalow, which rises in one part and thus offers a bedroom with a view of the surroundings, arranges the individual spaces linearly one behind the other. Terraces seem to grow out of them, forming a natural divide between the lawn outside and the oak floors inside. There is not a single staircase in the entire ground floor.

The architectural studio submitted the project to the Interior of the Year competition, which annually selects the best of Czech and Slovak design. All submitted projects implemented in 2023 can be viewed on the competition website, where readers can choose their favorite. Voting ends on April 30. The overall winner will be announced by the jury on May 14 at the DOX gallery of modern art in Prague.
