A magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurred on the 5th in the area of New York, the world’s most famous ‘skyscraper city’ and the largest city in the United States with a metropolitan population of approximately 20 million. Images of the famous landmark, the Statue of Liberty, as well as Manhattan’s high-rise buildings shaking strongly were posted one after another on local social media. There were also warnings that a similar or stronger earthquake could follow within weeks.
The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred around 10:23 a.m. on this day, was Hunterdon County, New Jersey, about 60 km west of New York City. The depth of the epicenter was 4.7 km. CNN reported that the earthquake that occurred in New Jersey was the strongest in 240 years since the magnitude 5.0 earthquake in 1884. Tremors were also felt in Boston, Massachusetts, more than 350 kilometers to the northeast.
It is not yet clear which fault specifically caused this earthquake. Earthquakes are frequent in the western United States, adjacent to the boundary where the ‘Pacific plate’ and ‘North American plate’ meet, but tectonic movements in the eastern part have been evaluated as stable, so this earthquake is considered unusual.
Real-time video transmitted through a webcam installed on the Statue of Liberty at the time of the earthquake showed the screen shaking violently. Airports in the area, including JF Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York, and Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, temporarily suspended takeoffs and landings but soon resumed them. A post titled “I AM FINE” was posted on social media
Damage from the earthquake was limited to some buildings being damaged. However, it is difficult to feel at ease yet as we cannot rule out the possibility that aftershocks will follow in the future. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) predicted a 16% chance of an aftershock of magnitude 4.0 or greater occurring within a month. Based on past cases, it is predicted that up to 27 aftershocks of magnitude 2.0 or greater may occur in the next week.
According to the New York Times (NYT), most high-rise buildings were built after 1995, when earthquake-resistant design became mandatory, so they are safe unless an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 or greater strikes. However, it was pointed out that many of the 200,000 houses are vulnerable to earthquakes.
