Police in the US state of Vermont are looking for a suspect who may have set a fire in front of Senator Bernie Sanders‘ office, the Associated Press reported. The incident caused minor damage, no injuries.
Authorities said an unknown male suspect sprayed what was believed to be an incendiary liquid on the office door, lit it on fire and fled. They said the suspect remains at large and his motive is still unknown.
“A significant fire destroyed the door and part of the vestibule, forcing employees who were working in the office to leave because their lives were at risk,” Burlington police said. “The fire-fighting system was then activated and the fire was extinguished,” she added.
Earlier in the day, the Burlington Fire Department said it responded to a fire yesterday morning between the lobby, elevator and front door outside Sanders’ office on the third floor of the building. There was damage to the office door and much of the third floor sustained significant damage from the water used to fight the fire. The offices near the fire, including that of Sanders, were evacuated, BTA reported.
So far, there has been no comment from Sanders’ spokespeople. The senator himself was not in the office.
