The Organization for the Management and Development of Cultural Resources commissioned a study with the aim of increasing the number of visitors to the last ranked 200 Archaeological sites, Monuments and Museums of Greece.

As mentioned, in the context of upgrading the country’s cultural stock and increasing citizens’ participation in it, Greek Museums and Archaeological sites are invited to look for new ways of approaching visitors. Thus, it is proposed to investigate in depth the reasons for the low attendance at 200 museums and archaeological sites of the Ministry of Culture in the Greek Territory, with the aim of submitting proposals for increasing the attendance at these sites.

In this context, a survey will be carried out by means of a questionnaire to the managers of these sites (antiquities inspectorates and site manager) regarding issues of operation and accessibility, events and actions, digital media, etc. At the same time, the ticket policy will be investigated, which will also include a comparative analysis of the ticket price with corresponding venues abroad. Also, economic and touristic factors will be analyzed and the current situation of Archaeological sites and museums will be recorded. The results of the research will also result in the submission of proposals to increase traffic.

It should be noted that last year a record was reached in the receipts from the entrances to the Museums and Archaeological sites. According to the latest figures of the Hellenic Statistical Authority for the period January-November, the total receipts recorded an increase of 30% compared to the corresponding period of 2022, reaching 155 million euros from 119.25 million euros.

In detail, during the eleven months of January – November 2023, an increase was observed, compared to the corresponding period of 2022, by 25.6% in Museum visitors, by 20.4% in free admission visitors and by 52.7% in the corresponding receipts. In the Archaeological sites, during the eleven months of January – November 2023, an increase was recorded compared to the corresponding period of the year 2022 by 22.5% in visitors, by 17.7% in free entry visitors and by 24.6% in the corresponding receipts.

2024, according to the data so far, is expected to be another good tourist year for Greece. The confirmation of the positive estimates is expected to lead to higher levels of both the visitation and the receipts of the Museums and Archaeological sites.
