The most extensive works will take place on regional highways – 220 kilometers long – and on national local highways – 159 kilometers long. Works will take place on the country’s main highways for a length of 71 kilometers.

The focus on national roads of local and regional importance can be explained by the funding structure – this year, 3 million euros more is available from the state budget for ensuring local mobility and implementing the program of connecting parish centers, explains LVC. On the other hand, a large part of the investments in the country’s regional roads are made within the framework of the administrative territorial reform.

Of the 450 kilometers of national roads to be repaired this year, 193 kilometers will be resurfaced with asphalt concrete, 123 kilometers will be rebuilt, while 67 kilometers of gravel roads will be resurfaced twice. A total of 24 kilometers of pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure will be built. Five bridges will be rebuilt, seven more will be demolished and rebuilt.

The biggest objects of construction work this season will be the Vidzeme highway section from Melturii to Bērzkrog, where the reconstruction started last year will be completed. The works started last summer will also continue on the Riga bypass in Babīte. In both sections, motorists will also have to expect traffic restrictions this year.

On regional highways, the biggest works are planned in Kurzeme – on the Ventspils-Dundaga highway from Ventspils to Auce, in Vidzeme – on the Smiltene-Valka highway from Smiltene to the turn to Mēri. On the other hand, a new bridge over Salac will be built in Salacgrīva this year.

Two traffic junctions will be rebuilt to improve traffic safety. The intersection of the Inciems-Sigulda-Ķegums and Rīga-Ārgli highways in Suntaži, Ogre county, will be converted into a roundabout.

On the other hand, on the section of the Vidzeme highway from the Riga border to Garkalne, changes in the traffic organization are planned this year. In the whole stage, it is planned to create a new, “better-perceived direction indicator system for drivers”, as well as to close some of the turning points. It is planned to reduce the number of left-hand maneuvers on the Riga bypass near Langstiniņi.

Currently, construction works have started on seven sections of national roads, as well as on three bridges. Due to repairs, the biggest traffic restrictions are currently on the regional roads Ventspils-Kolka near Ventspils, the section of the Kandava-Saldus road from Zante to Zemīte and on the road Smiltene-Valka near Smiltene.
