Minex: Hugo Beteta will be appointed as the next Guatemalan ambassador to the US.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minex) confirmed this Thursday that economist Hugo Beteta will be appointed as the next Ambassador of Guatemala to the United States, in Washington, DC

As detailed, Beteta has a long professional career, was the candidate proposed by the Government of Guatemala and has received the approval of the Government of the United States of America.
“This appointment is in process and the Agreement is being prepared for him to take possession soon. Beteta had a strategic participation in the recent official tour of President Bernardo Arévalo in the United States,” the Foreign Ministry indicated.
Among Beteta’s notable positions is that he was Director of the Subregional Headquarters in Mexico of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). He was previously Secretary General of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
He was also Minister of Public Finance and head of the Planning and Programming Secretariat, during the presidential term of Óscar Berger and served as Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the Rafael Landívar University.
He studied Development Economics and Political Economy in the Doctoral program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, (MIT). Additionally, in 2007 he was highlighted by the World Bank as one of the Ten Reformers of the Year and in 2008 he received the Order of Isabella the Catholic from Spain. He was also a Fulbright Commission Fellow and a Fellow of the Aga Kahn, MIT-Voorhees, and MacArthur Foundations.
