Nicaragua has appealed to the International Court of Justice to oblige Berlin to stop exporting arms to Israel and reverse its decision to stop funding the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
This was reported by The New York Times.
The two-day hearing, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in The Hague, is part of a broader case brought by Nicaragua in which it accuses Germany of violating the Genocide Convention and the laws of war by supporting Israel.
“By sending military equipment and now defunding UNRWA, which provides essential support to civilians, Germany is facilitating the commission of genocide,” the statement said.
German government spokesman Wolfgang Büchner stressed that Germany would express its position in court, but noted that he considered the accusations unfounded.
Information from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute indicates that Berlin is one of Israel’s key allies and the country’s second largest arms supplier after the United States. Approximately 30% of Israel’s arms imports come from Germany.
As you know, until January of this year, Germany was the second largest donor to the UNRWA agency. However, following Israeli accusations that agency employees were involved in horrific crimes committed by Hamas terrorists during the October 7 invasion, Germany cut its funding.
Earlier, “Cursor” wrote that the Israeli team at the International Court of Justice in The Hague expressed concern that last Thursday it was possible to achieve an advantage of only two votes among the 16 judges on the panel to prevent the adoption of a resolution to end the war in the Gaza Strip on the third request of South Africa .
