Mafia-turned-politician Arun Gawli had filed a petition in the court for release under the 2006 rule of the Maharashtra government. He had also cited lung and stomach related diseases in his petition. Nagpur Central Jail authorities had rejected his application. The jail administration had argued that under a new notification issued on December 1, 2015, prisoners serving sentences under MCOCA cannot be given the benefits of the old rule. While hearing the case, the court has sought answers from the jail administration and Maharashtra government. Arun Gawli is now 70 years old and has served 16 years more than the 14 years as per the rules.
