The former vice president of Ecuador, Jorge Glas, the protagonist of the diplomatic crisis between Mexico and Ecuador, was urgently admitted to a hospital in Guayaquil after being arrested in the violent assault on the Mexican embassy in Quito.
Ecuadorian media, through sources close to the Citizen Revolution movement, of which Glas is a member, suggested that the politician had attempted suicide.

Glas, who had been taking refuge since December in the Mexican embassy in Ecuador, would have combined several anxiolytic, antidepressant and sedative medications in La Roca prison, in Guayaquil, according to Ecuadorian media.
After the “overdose,” the politician was taken from the maximum security prison to the Guayaquil Naval Hospital, in Ecuador, to receive medical attention.
However, Ecuador’s National Service for Comprehensive Care of Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI) noted that Glas’s refusal to eat was what caused him to end up in the hospital.

According to the entity, Glas would not have responded to the call from the prison staff, so “security and health care protocols” were activated for the inmate.
“It was determined that the person deprived of liberty, Jorge G., suffered a possible decompensation due to his refusal to consume food during the last 24 hours,” reads the official SNAI document.
Glas is “stable, and will remain under observation for the next few hours, prior to returning to the Deprivation of Liberty Center,” the entity explained.
The conflict between Ecuador and Mexico broke out when Mexico granted Glas asylum, despite accusations of corruption and embezzlement he faces in his home country.

This decision was considered an “illicit act” by the Ecuadorian government, which caused the breaking of diplomatic relations between both countries and the withdrawal of Mexican diplomatic personnel from Ecuador after the police assault on the embassy. Ecuador’s act was condemned internationally.
