The last day of the League Cup will be played next weekend and will determine which teams qualify for the quarterfinals, given that so far only Godoy Cruz de Mendoza has secured his ticket in Zone B of the competition. In the other group, there are still four tickets left, with six suitors to take them.
Six sets for three seats
With Godoy Cruz already classified, in zone B they continue with a chance of getting into the top eight, Lanús, Defensa y Justicia, Boca, Racing, Estudiantes de La Plata and Newell’s.
The teams that depend on themselves are Lanús, Defensa y Justicia and Boca, which still owes the match with Estudiantes that was suspended due to Javier Altamirano’s decompensation and which is tied 0-0 midway through the first half. By winning one of their two matches, the pending one – without a confirmed date – against Estudiantes or against Godoy Cruz in La Bombonera, Diego Martínez’s team will guarantee their ticket to the next phase. The same thing happens with Defensa and with Lanús, that if they win their remaining commitment, they will get their place without importing other variants.
For its part, Estudiantes also have mathematical chances of advancing without looking at other results if they get four of the six points they have at stake. As on the last day they will visit Lanús, it will be a direct duel, with the chance to pass the maroon team in the table with an eventual victory. If you lose the postponed game against Boca, you will have to look at other results, regardless of the hypothetical victory against Lanús.
As for Racing and Newell’s, they need to win and wait for help from the other matches to get among the four best in Zone B. The team led by Gustavo Costas visits Belgrano, while the Rosario team will play in Florencio Varela against Defensa y Justicia .
So far, this is how they are located in the main positions in the standings: Godoy Cruz, 26; Lanús 23 and +7 goal difference; Defense and Justice (23 and +3); Boca (22 and +8); Racing (21 and +9), Estudiantes (21 and +8) and Newell’s (21 and -1).
Six teams for four places
Zone A, unlike Zone B, does not yet have any team guaranteed in the next phase of the competition: Argentinos Juniors, Barracas Central, River, Talleres, Independiente and Vélez remain with a chance of qualifying with one day left.
The particular case is that of Argentinos and Barracas, who lead the table and face each other, so with a tie both ensure their passage to the quarterfinals. If there is a winner, the group will be awarded. Meanwhile, the loser must wait for the other results to know his fate.
In addition, Talleres de Córdoba and Independiente also depend on themselves, since they will collide with each other in Avellaneda and the winner will take the place from their rival, although the Córdoba team with a draw could advance if Vélez does not win.
River, for its part, needs to win or equal to continue in the competition, since it has the best goal difference with respect to all its rivals, so in case of equality of points it triumphs in all tiebreakers. Your opponent on the decisive day is Instituto in Córdoba. Of the six, the one with the least chance is Vélez, who must win and wait for other results: that Independiente and Talleres draw or that River loses in Córdoba. His rival will be Independiente Rivadavia in Mendoza.
So far, this is how they are in the main positions in the standings: Argentinos Juniors (25 and +11), Barracas Central (25 and +5); River (24 and +14); Workshops (23 and +8); Independiente (22 and +4) and Vélez (22 and 0).
