A successful collaboration between industry and research resulted in a breakthrough in the truck industry: the “Composite Ultralight” trailer.

The ultra-light semi-trailer, developed by a consortium of Kalocsa-based Budamobil-Cargo Kft., the engineering firm TETT Kft. in Baja and the János Neumann University in Kecskemét, is an example of innovation through new composite materials.

Less consumption

With the same dimensions, the new trailer weighs 30% less than conventional models, and individual components are even up to 70% lighter. This reduction results in significant savings in fuel consumption and tire wear. In addition to composite materials, high-strength steels with improved bonding technology were also incorporated into the chassis. This is how the prototype series of ultra-light semi-trailers was created, in which innovative material combinations were used based on the research results of Neumann University. Financial support for this pioneering project came from the NKFI Innovation Office fund, which provided more than 610 million forints (1.6 million euros).

Economic success

The semi-trailer manufacturer Budamobil-Cargo coordinated the production of the composite bodies, while the TETT engineering office was responsible for the production of small metal parts. Budamobil-Cargo Kft. recorded an increase in net sales from 1.8 billion forints to almost 2.6 billion forints in 2022, and profits rose from 65 million to around 100 million forints. In the same period, TETT Mérnökiroda Kft. achieved sales growth by half to almost 1.2 billion forints and an increase in profits from 15 million to 75 million forints.
