(ANSA) – ROME, 08 APR – The plenary session of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences (Pass) on Disability and the Human Condition opens tomorrow, at the Casina Pio IV, which aims to address “the complex experiences of people with disabilities and promote transformative changes in social norms and policies towards inclusiveness and equity”.
The first day will end with the delivery of the parchments of nomination as Honorary Academician to the prof. Joseph Stiglitz and prof. Stefano Zamagni.
“This is the first time since its founding in 1994 that PASS has dedicated a plenary session to people with disabilities. It is fitting that on its thirtieth anniversary we should consider this important group sometimes called the world’s ‘third nation’ which for their global population is close to that of India and China. They are also a key group in the pontificate of Pope Francis, who urgently wants people with disabilities to move from being “hidden exiles” to being active participants in society. The Pass plenary is a contribution to making this possible”, underlined the president of the Pass, Sister Helen Alford OP.
Cardinal Chancellor Peter Turkson recalls how in the encyclical Fratelli Tutti Pope Francis, regarding people with disabilities, wrote: “The objective is not only to assist them, but their active participation in the civil and ecclesial community. It is a demanding path and also tiring, which will increasingly contribute to forming consciences capable of recognizing everyone as a unique and unrepeatable person'”. “The Plenary of the Pass in its thirtieth year since its foundation – continues the Cardinal – wants to contribute to the path to which the Holy Father called, that is, disabled people from subjects in need of care to people and citizens fully integrated into social, cultural and political life of Christian countries and communities”.
