Chapped lips are a common problem that many people suffer from, even when using well-known lip balms, which may sometimes have adverse effects, according to the American CNN network.

Dermatologist Reshmi Kapoor says that the problem of chapped lips is mainly because they “lack the protective layers that prevent moisture loss, unlike skin.”

She adds, “The skin contains a moisture barrier called the stratum corneum, which is the outer layer of the skin that prevents water from leaving the body, while the lips contain a very thin horny layer, which makes them more vulnerable to damage compared to other parts of the body.”

She continues: “In addition, the lips lack other skin features, such as hair follicles, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands that provide additional moisture or oils.”

Since the lips cannot produce their own moisture, they are susceptible to drying out easily when temperatures rise, excessive exposure to sunlight or during cold weather, according to Kapoor.

Dermatologists recommend using a lip balm that contains Vaseline, as it acts as an occlusive (sealant) to maintain lip moisture without irritating the skin with added chemicals.

While people should use Vaseline as needed, Kapoor recommended applying a “generous” amount at night to moisturize the lips.

In addition to using Vaseline, Kapoor says: “You should stay away from the sun, as ultraviolet rays can dry it out, and it may also be vulnerable to skin cancer.”

To maintain lip moisture, according to CNN, Kapoor also recommended shea butter and ceramides, a type of fat found in skin cells. Both components strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier and prevent water from leaking.

Additionally, she says, “people should drink plenty of water throughout the day.”

The doctor recommends avoiding using lip scrubs, warning that “it may make the lips more vulnerable to environmental irritants.”

Does chapped lips indicate a disease?

If chapped lips persist or worsen, you should consult a dermatologist, as it can often be a symptom of another health condition, says senior academic resident in the department of dermatology at New York University School of Medicine, Cheyenne Sheraglou.

He continues: “For example, chapped lips often occur in people who suffer from vitamin deficiency or thyroid disease, in addition to angular cheilitis.”

He explains that “angular cheilitis is a skin condition that is often confused with chapped lips, as it causes small cracks in the corner of the mouth,” noting that the condition may be exacerbated by licking the lips and will not improve with the use of moisturizers, and its treatment is through a topical antifungal.
