Kim Yeon-kyung (36, Heungkuk Life Insurance), who was at the crossroads between retirement and extending her active career, expressed her determination to challenge for the championship again, saying, “I will show my fans one more time that I am at the top.”
After being selected as the MVP of the women’s regular league at the Dodram 2023-24 V-League Awards Ceremony held at The K Hotel in Yangjae-dong, Seoul on the 8th, Kim Yeon-kyung said, “I will take on one more challenge next season.”
Kim Yeon-kyung, who wore the uniform of Heungkuk Life Insurance as the first pick in the first round of the 2005-06 season, dominated the domestic stage by winning three V-League titles (2005-06, 2006-07, and 2008-09 seasons) early in her career. Afterwards, he entered the overseas stage and swept the trophy.
However, after returning to the domestic stage in 2020, at the end of his career, he fell from the brink of the top every time. In particular, in his last two seasons, he reached the championship game but only finished second. It was a disappointing and disappointing achievement for Kim Yeon-kyung, who revealed her intention to win the V-League for the last time before her retirement.
He, who had been contemplating whether to extend his active duty or retire, announced at the awards ceremony that he would ‘refreshingly’ try again.
Kim Yeon-kyung said at the MVP press conference, “I made up my mind to some extent from the middle of the season. “After discussing my concerns with club officials, coaches, family, and acquaintances, I decided to extend my active duty as my individual performance this year was not bad,” he said.
It is a challenge that may be a bit of a burden as we have finished in second place for the past two seasons in a row.
However, Kim Yeon-kyung was full of confidence. He said, “Even though it’s a burden, I have to overcome it and win. I want to show people who want to see me play volleyball at the top one more time.”
Although he has expressed his intention to extend his active duty, it is still unclear whether next season will be his last. Professional baseball players, such as Lee Seung-yeop, even considered it a ‘retirement season’ and entered their final season.
After hearing this, Kim Yeon-kyung said, “If next season will be the last, we will announce it in advance and hold the season. “Many people are supporting us, but I think we should all prepare our hearts,” she said.
Meanwhile, Kim Yeon-kyung won the MVP award for the sixth time in her career, breaking the record for the most in V-League history. In addition, she played seven seasons in the V-League and became the top star six times.
Kim Yeon-kyung said, “I didn’t know it was my 6th award. “Compared to the MVP award I received when I was young, I am even more thankful that I am at the top of my game even though I am about to retire,” he said. “I will challenge for my 7th award next year as I have one more season to go.”
He continued, “It doesn’t seem right for a player who is about to retire to play with the goal of MVP. “I hope there will be more competitors next season,” he said. “I will also try to keep up with the competition.” “I said I wanted to retire at the top, but so far things are going similar to the picture I drew,” he said.
