In a joint effort to promote responsible tourism and combat the sexual exploitation of minors, the Mayor’s Office of Medellín and the accommodation platform Airbnb have signed a historic agreement. This agreement, announced during a press conference led by Mayor Federico Gutiérrez and Airbnb executives, aims to share relevant information about tourists who use the application in the city.

With this pact, both parties seek to address the recent cases of child sexual exploitation that have arisen in the capital of Antioquia. According to Mayor Gutiérrez, «Airbnb is a key player as one of the main tourist platforms in the city. Medellín receives one and a half million tourists a year, half of them foreigners, and we will continue to grow. However, we need to change the focus of our tourism. We are looking for tourism that adds value. “We do not tolerate the sexual exploitation of minors.”

The agreement establishes an exchange of information between the Mayor’s Office and Airbnb to identify possible cases of child exploitation and take preventive measures. This collaboration marks a milestone in the fight against this scourge, demonstrating the commitment of both the local government and private companies to protect the children of Medellín.

It is hoped that this initiative will not only help stop child exploitation in tourism, but also promote a culture of responsible tourism in the city, where the well-being of the community is a priority in each visit.
