Caleb Levitan, an eighth-grade student at King David’s School in Linksfield, Johannesburg, has set a unique record by becoming the youngest member of South Africa’s elite chess team heading to the Global Chess Olympiad in Budapest this September.

At the South African Closed Chess Championship, which took place from March 25 to April 2, 13-year-old Jewish chess player Caleb finished second among twelve participants, guaranteeing himself a place on the team. Caleb’s father, Shawn Levitan, noted that his son’s ranking placed him “in the top five of the best players in the country,” and added:
“Given the level of competition at the tournament, his results are a clear testament to his talent and skill.”
He also added that this was Caleb’s first experience of competing among seniors, and his second place speaks not only of his talent, but also of his ability to perform under pressure.
The International Chess Foundation now classifies young Levitan as the 5098th best chess player in the world and the 47th best player in Africa, giving him the title of “master”.
