New Delhi: Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday included Sri Lankan young leg spinner Vijayakanth Vyaskanth in the team in place of injured Wanindu Hasaranga in the current season of the Indian Premier League. Vijayakanth, 22, who has played one T20 international for Sri Lanka, is a similar option to leg spinner Hasaranga. Vijayakanth has joined Sunrisers at a base price of Rs 50 lakh.
“Sunrisers Hyderabad has signed Vijaykant Vyaskanth as a replacement for the injured Wanindu Hasaranga for the remaining matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024,” the IPL said in a statement.
Last year, 2016 champion Sunrisers had bought Hasaranga for Rs 1.5 crore. But he was out of IPL this year due to pain in the heel of his left foot. Hasaranga previously played for Royal Challengers Bangalore. His performance in the 2022 season was excellent and he took 26 wickets while giving runs at the rate of 7.54 runs per over. But in 2023, he played only eight matches and took 9 wickets while giving runs at a rate of 8.9 runs per over.
IPL 2024: SRH’s blast on home ground, CSK lost two matches after two consecutive wins.
Who is Hasaranga’s replacement Vijayakanth?
Vijaykant Vyaskant first came into limelight in December 2020, when he was just 18 years 364 days old. He became the youngest player to play in the Lanka Premier League. Vijayakanth became the youngest player to play for Jaffna Stallions in the Lanka Premier League. In the same tournament, Vijayakanth Vyasakantha became the first player from Jaffna in the northern part of Sri Lanka (which was once the epicenter of the civil war) to be selected in an internationally televised match.
He represented Sri Lanka in one T20 match at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. Also, he impressed for champion team MI Emirates in the ILT20 by taking 8 wickets in 4 matches at an economy rate of 5.43. Now it will be interesting to see whether Vijaykant is able to leave his mark in the IPL or not.
