50 years this year… Seoul Declaration to be announced

Do you know about the ‘Lausanne Conference (International Conference on World Evangelization)’?

The ‘2024 Seoul-Incheon 4th Lausanne Conference’, hosted by the Korea Lausanne Committee (Chairman Lee Jae-hoon, Pastor of Onnuri Church) and the Asia Lausanne Committee, will be held in Seoul and Incheon from September 22nd to 28th. The Lausanne Conference is a place where Christian leaders from around the world gather to seek strategies and plans for world evangelization. It was started in 1974 by world-renowned evangelical leaders Billy Graham (1918-2018) and Pastor John Stott (1921-2011) with the goal of finding evangelical missionary power and rediscovering the missionary identity of the church. The first competition was held in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1974, and has been called the ‘Lausanne Competition’ ever since. The second competition was held in Manila, Philippines in 1989, and the third competition was held in Cape Town, South Africa in 2010. About 10,000 people, including Christian leaders, missionaries, and believers from 220 countries around the world, are expected to participate in the 50th anniversary Seoul-Incheon Games.

The theme of the competition is ‘Let the Church Declare and Display Christ Together’. During the conference, Bible lectures, over 900 small group discussions, topic lectures and rallies will be held, and the Seoul Declaration will be announced on the last day. The Lausanne Convention declaration attracted attention not only from the Christian world but also from society each time it was announced because it presented topics about the world church and missions. The ‘Lausanne Declaration’ adopted at the first convention stated that ‘we must realize justice and reconciliation everywhere in human society and participate in God’s interest in liberating humans from all kinds of oppression. “We have neglected this fact, and we regret that we have sometimes viewed evangelism and social participation as contradictory to each other,” he stated. This had a great impact on the domestic evangelical world, which was concerned about its direction in the era of military dictatorship. This spirit continued in the 2nd Manila Games and the 3rd Cape Town Games, and is expected to remain the same in the Seoul-Incheon Games.

The Korea Lausanne Committee said, “This Seoul-Incheon conference will be an opportunity to explore how Christians should respond in a changing world, such as ministries in the digital age such as artificial intelligence (AI), the aging world population, radical politics and religious freedom. “It is,” he said.
