With the intervention of the police, who even went so far as to shoot in the air, it became possible to disarm a patient who was threatening the medical and nursing staff of the Arta Hospital with scissors.
It all started at 1 am on Monday, when the 45-year-old patient reacted to his imminent transfer from the Pathology Clinic, where he was being treated, to the Pulmonology Clinic. In a state of amok, he grabbed a pair of scissors and began threatening the nurses and other staff, who rushed to help, while the Police were also called for assistance. “He was excitable and highly aggressive. He hit his exclusive, left the infirmary, smashing everything in front of him. He went to the emergency room, grabbed scissors, threatened doctors, nurses, cleaners. He grabbed the only security guard and put the scissors to his throat”, the president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDIN) Michalis Giannakos said in his statements.
Strong forces were found at the scene and the police found the perpetrator outside the hospital threatening the security staff, holding the scissors. Despite their pleas to throw the scissors away, he continued to threaten them and moved towards them in threatening moods. One of the policemen fired in the air, towards the dasylli, with the 45-year-old dazed and the policemen taking the opportunity to disarm him, putting an end to the thriller.
The 45-year-old patient was arrested and is being treated under guard in a room at the Pulmonology Clinic, while a psychiatric examination was ordered. A case file was filed against him for disruption of service, violence against employees, threat and violation of weapons legislation.
The Hospital management who were alerted and arrived at the hospital during the night, had to replace staff from the two clinics due to the commotion and shock they had suffered. “What else will we see in hospitals… We are at the mercy of every bully. What needs to be done to take action? When the bad happens then let’s see what they have to say to us. We are going for work, not for war”, commented Mr. Giannakos.
