The power of the unannounced PlayStation 5 Pro will most likely not be enough to run all new video games at a stable frame rate of 60 FPS. This was reported by Wccftech, citing an analysis by Digital Foundry technical specialists Richard Ledbetter, Alexander Battaglia and John Linneman, Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru.
Unlike the PlayStation 4 Pro, the new PlayStation 5 Pro will not receive a double increase in processing units (CUs), and the increased clock speed of the current CUs will not allow doubling FPS. Consistent VRAM and RAM bandwidth will also be a limiting factor.
According to rumors, the main performance increase in the PlayStation 5 Pro will be provided by upscaling technology, which Sony is developing together with AMD. In conjunction with the hardware upgrade, Digital Foundry also expects improvements in the performance of ray tracing technology. It will probably be used more often in games.
Not much is known about the new upscaling algorithm from Sony and AMD. Judging by the patents, the companies are working on a new version of “checkerboard” rendering, which will allow increasing the resolution of individual image fragments.
It is unknown when exactly the PlayStation 5 Pro will hit the market. Digital Foundry believes that this will happen in the second half of 2024.
