The leadership of Nicaragua decided to sever diplomatic relations with Ecuador after the storming of the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who was hiding there, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
“Given the reprehensible actions carried out in Quito by forces that are supposed to protect the order and security of Ecuadorian citizens and their lives, <...> We declare our sovereign decision to sever all diplomatic relations with the Government of Ecuador, while at the same time we once again express our <...> “We respect the beloved Ecuadorian people, who live in times of unimaginable cruelty, and reaffirm our commitment to international law and the conventions that regulate civilized relations between states and governments of the world,” the Central American government said in a statement.
Managua also expresses solidarity with the Mexican authorities and offers its support in protecting its interests. “Our solidarity and support in any legal claims that may arise in connection with this, the President of Mexico, Mr. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and the government of the country,” the document says.
On April 5, Mexican authorities announced that Glas had been granted political asylum. The politician is accused in a corruption case. Glas had already served a sentence in prison from 2017 to 2022. Previously, the diplomatic mission refused to allow police into its territory to arrest Glas.
