Physical movement is good for both the physical human body and the brain. According to the professor, during active movement, our speed muscles work and thus produce hormones, some of which enter our brain through the bloodstream.

“More recently, scientists named these hormones myokines. When they enter the brain, they stimulate their activity and the production of new neurons. In this way, people’s memory and concentration improve, it becomes easier for them to study, and their resistance to stress increases, says A. Skurvydas.

“Also, some myokines reach other organs – intestines, stomach, heart, bones, pancreas – and contribute to their regeneration. Therefore, when moving, the benefits are felt throughout the body,” says the professor.

Movement on the weekend is three times more beneficial

The sports scientist points out that recent studies have shown that the benefit of movement on the weekend is even three times higher than on weekdays. “This is because a person doesn’t have to go to work on the weekend, he doesn’t experience stress, he has more time to rest, so the benefits of movement are greater,” says A. Skurvydas, “This is called the paradox of movement in science – it would seem that if you move after work, the whole day’s tension in the body should decrease with the help of movement, but in reality, stress only increases. After active movement, you need rest, and there is simply no time for this during the working day. On the weekend, a person moves physically and has time to rest, which has a positive effect on his well-being in general.”

The professor says that people who spent the weekend actively are happier. Dr. also notices this. Rimantas Simaitis, partner of the “COBALT” professional association of lawyers, long-distance running and triathlon enthusiast, employees who moved during the weekend return to work on Monday in a more energetic and better mood.

“We constantly encourage the physical activity of the team in various inclusive forms, we organize walking, running, cycling and other sports activity challenges, and we participate in mass running events.

For example, we currently use the Walk15 app to count steps taken by our team. We set ourselves the goal of traveling 50 million people in a few months. steps and thus virtually circumnavigate the globe. We see the team’s pitching stats increase sometimes on weekends and holidays. Those who were physically active return to work on Monday more rested, it is easier for them to concentrate, they are more attentive to details,” says the partner.

There is no one way to force yourself to move

All people are different, so there is no single movement recipe that works for everyone. It is true that A. Skurvydas singles out actions that can encourage people’s physical activity.

“First, knowing the health and quality of life benefits of physical activity can get people moving. People need to be educated and told why moving is useful – after all, we all want to live longer, get sick less and spend money,” the researcher notes.

Secondly, according to him, an environment adapted to this can also encourage a person to move. If the place where a person lives is suitable for movement, that is, there is an attractive walking, running or cycling path, a park or a forest nearby – a person will go outside without much effort.

Thirdly, the professor says that a certain stimulus, challenges, such as the “Walk15” step challenge, various hikes, movement festivals, races, can encourage people to start moving: “Knowing how great the benefits of movement are for the body – all means are commendable.”

R.Simaitis adds that sports challenges and other creative means of involving the team in agility activities really contribute to employee activity. “Lawyers are energetic people who like challenges. Therefore, various sports challenges, participation in mass runs serve to encourage them to engage in physical activity. The use of various apps and mass running events allow them to track results and compete with each other, which undoubtedly shows effective examples and increases motivation to live a healthy and active life,” says R. Simaitis.

“This year, we initiated the first mass 5 km run of the Lithuanian Bar Association around Kaunas Ėžuolyn, which will take place on the last Saturday of April. We are glad that the proposed idea received support from other fellow lawyers. We believe that the first lawyers’ run in history will create a beautiful tradition of promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in the lawyer community,” adds R. Simaitis.

Everyone has to move

The professor points out that there is no big difference where a person moves – whether in a store, stadium or city – it is important that a person is physically active. World Health Organization 2020 has provided recommendations on how many steps each person should take per day according to their age.

10-14 thousand is recommended for 4-6 year old children. steps per day, for children aged 7 to 11 years – from 13 to 15 thousand, for young people aged 12 to 19 years – from 10 to 12 thousand, and for adults from 20 years of age it is suggested to take from 7 to 10 thousand steps per day. It is recommended to move from 6 to 8 thousand for pregnant women, and 7 to 9 thousand for people with disabilities. steps per day, says A. Skurvydas.
