On Wednesday, I. Vēgėlė announced on Facebook that he does not want financial support from the peasants and called his decision a “principle decision.”
“In response to the fact that the Party of Lithuanian Peasants and Greens is considering offering me financial support, I inform you in advance that I will have to refuse it. Thank you for the trust and the necessary political, valuable non-financial support. However, I made this decision because I want to represent all the people of Lithuania. I want to remain independent, impartial, not financially committed to any political party, – declared I. Vēgėlė. – I thank LVŽS for non-financial support and all party members for their support and desire to cooperate.”
At the end of March, LVŽS publicly expressed its political support for I. Vēgēle. Former Minister of Health Aurelijs Veryga was previously the candidate for the presidency of the peasants, but the LVŽS council finally decided not to nominate their candidate and to support I. Vēgėlė.
Last week, R. Karbauskis told the ELTA news agency that the party would consider the issue of financial support for I. Vēgėli, if he expressed his wish.
“There is no attachment to whether the amount is from the party account or the balance from another candidate. We should simply consider the need and the possibilities. Because we as a party will have another election. It is out of the question for hundreds of thousands of euros. Here, we might be talking about tens of thousands of euros,” he said.
