The Minister of Energy of Romania, the Romanian co-chairman of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation with Azerbaijan, Sebastian-Ioan Burduja, called Azerbaijan an important “bridge” between the Caspian and Black Seas on the route of transporting goods from Asia to Europe, Day.Az reports on Monday with reference to Trend on the results of the 8th meeting of this commission in Baku.

“The development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor (TITC) is very important in the current difficult realities in the context of the delivery of goods from Asia to Europe and back. There is a problem with the Suez Canal, and therefore the role of alternative corridors is growing,” Burduja said.

Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan Samir Mamedov, who spoke during the meeting, noted the prospects for the participation of Romanian companies in TMTM.

“One of the main advantages of the TMTM (or Middle Corridor) is that the countries located along this corridor have friendly relations and very close cooperation. We are making efforts to expand the corridor together with partner countries, and are also working to identify bottlenecks “on the route for its successful development,” Mamedov said.

He recalled that in 2023, the volume of transportation along the TMTM increased by 86 percent and reached 2.76 million tons, while in 2022 this figure was 1.5 million tons, and in 2021 – 586 thousand tons.

It should be noted that the TMTM has been in effect for 10 years, and there are plans to gradually increase transit through it to 10 million tons per year or more by 2030.
