(ANSA) – MILAN, APRIL 09 – The fight against prostate cancer is a game played as a team. This is the message of the “Men’s Pro” campaign, promoted by Pfizer Italia in collaboration with Europa Uomo and the Italian Rugby Federation. Taking advantage of the parallelism with the game of rugby, the campaign aims to raise awareness and overcome the barriers and sense of isolation that are too often linked to this male pathology. By describing the disease from the point of view of those affected, of the clinicians (oncologists and urologists) and of the multidisciplinary team (nutritionist, sexologist, psycho-oncologist), “Men’s Pro” wants to make those affected, especially by the metastatic form, feel part of a team . The campaign, presented today, will be conveyed through a website (www.menspro.it) and the dissemination of not only visuals with the Italian national rugby team, but also in-depth information.
“For patients, information is the first medicine” specifies Claudio Talmelli, president of Europa Uomo. Prostate cancer is the most frequent cancer in the male population in Western countries and in Italy it represents 19.8% of all male cancers, with 41,000 new diagnoses in 2023. To date, 564,000 Italians live with this diagnosis neoplasm, with an increase in new cases per year in the last three years of 14%: today more than 60% manage to defeat the neoplasm but over 5%, as a prevalence figure, suffer from its most serious form, tumor of the metastatic prostate. Furthermore, among patients with metastatic disease, 66.1% develop the castration-resistant form.
“It is prevention and increasingly precise diagnostic tools that make prostate cancer one of the most curable today – specifies Sergio Bracarda, president of the Italian Society of Uro-Oncology (SIUrO) -. Furthermore, thanks to the molecular analysis of the disease, Even forms of metastatic prostate cancer have begun to be treated more successfully with the use of targeted therapies that act on cellular repair mechanisms. Their availability is changing the prognosis of these pathologies, which was difficult until a few years ago, especially if resistant to castration, managing to lengthen survival expectancy and also guarantee a good quality of life”.
