“It must be possible (to find a new minister – ELTA). There is no other way because we risk the future of our children. It’s a pity that the minister is resigning from his post under such circumstances, but, I think, given the conditions, this is the only way out,” G. Nausėda told reporters on Wednesday.
“We will look for those suitable candidates and I will definitely not rush to confirm a new minister until I am sure that this minister will be able to work successfully until the end of the term – although it would seem that what is the goal if there are a few months left,” he explained.
The head of the country emphasized that it will not be easy for the politician replacing G. Jakšta to occupy the position of minister and solve the situation in the field of education.
“I understand that we have created such a mess in the education sector that it will certainly not be easy for the new minister to even sort out that mess in the first place – let alone strategies. But we have to do it and we will certainly strive for it”, assured G. Nausėda.
When asked if he intends to propose potential candidates for the position of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonyta, G. Nausėda indicated that all options are possible. However, the president continued, he wants to discuss the situation with the head of the government first.
“Perhaps there will be opportunities to talk about possible candidates. But today, as I understand it, the main purpose of the meeting is simply the resignation of the minister”, said G. Nausėda.
ELTA reminds that Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė will meet and discuss the situation with President G. Nausėda on Wednesday after the Minister of Education, Science and Sports G. Jakšta submitted his resignation request.
On Tuesday, Minister G. Jakštas once again submitted his resignation request to the Prime Minister as the problems regarding the intermediate examinations of the eleventh grades continued.
As the minister told LRT television on Tuesday evening, he was prompted to resign immediately before the press conference by an order received without discussion from the Government’s leadership team, related to the evaluation scale of the eleventh intermediate examinations.
Deputy Minister Ramūnas Skaudžius, who is responsible for the implementation of interim inspections, announced his resignation on Tuesday.
G. Jakštas had already submitted his letter of resignation to I. Šimonyte in mid-March. However, then the head of the Government decided not to satisfy him.
G. Jakštas was appointed as minister in the summer of last year, when the then minister Jurgita Šiugždinienė resigned following a scandal regarding the transparency of the use of funds allocated for the activities of municipal council members.
According to the Constitution, ministers in Lithuania are appointed and dismissed by the president on the recommendation of the prime minister.
