Taean-gun is promoting a ‘shellfish fishery regeneration pilot project’ in Majeum-ri, Geunheung-myeon. This year, Taean-gun is embarking on a systematic effort to increase the productivity of the ‘shellfish fishery’, the home of local fishermen.

The county announced on the 9th that it plans to promote the ‘2024 Shellfish Fishery Regeneration Pilot Project’ in Majeum Fishing Village, Majeum-ri, Geunheung-myeon, with a total project cost of 150 million won, including provincial expenses, from May to December of this year.

The shellfish fishery regeneration pilot project is aimed at maximizing the harvest of clams and other shellfish through the regeneration of old fishing grounds, and the county secured 36 million won in provincial funding as Majeum Fishing Village was ranked first in the South Chungcheong Province contest announced last month.

As of April, 225 fishing village members are making a living by harvesting clams in an area of 228ha. In order to respond to the aging and disappearance of fishing villages, the Majeum fishing village has established a systematic fishing management system led by residents, including members, based on the high will of the fishermen. As a result, a self-management development project has been promoted here for four years since 2020.

Starting next month, the county plans to improve the habitat environment and introduce various equipment, such as spreading sand, in the Mageum fishing village, while also making multifaceted efforts to regenerate shellfish fishing grounds and increase production, such as spraying about 20 tons of clam shells.

A military official said, “Unlike fishing boats and fish farming, shellfish harvesting can be done easily by beginners and the barrier to entry is low due to the low capital burden, so if the harvest increases, it is expected that fishing villages will be revitalized through the influx of new fishermen.” He added, “Fishing villages in the Taean area. “We will continue to make efforts, including participation in various public offering projects, to revitalize .”
