(ANSA) – WASHINGTON, APRIL 10 – New shocking video on the violence of American law enforcement. The images, taken from a policeman’s bodycam on March 21 and released only now, show plainclothes officers firing 96 shots in 42 seconds during a road check, killing a 26-year-old African-American driver, Dexter Reed, who was stopped for not wearing a seatbelt. The police opened fire after Reed, according to the official version, refused to get out of the vehicle and fired first, wounding an officer. Last month in Chicago, five officers from a tactical unit in an unmarked police vehicle surrounded the SUV driven by Dexter Reed, allegedly for not wearing a seatbelt. The video shows the driver briefly roll down a window, then roll it up and refuse to get out of the car when other officers arrive, yelling commands and drawing their weapons. The Civil Office of Police Accountability said preliminary investigations showed Reed fired first, wounding an officer in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. Then four officers returned fire, firing 96 shots. However, the shooting continued even after “Reed got out of his vehicle and fell to the ground”, admitted the office responsible for ascertaining the responsibility of the police, releasing the footage of the camera worn by one of the officers, the 911 calls and police reports. The video offers a more complete perspective than what police initially reported last month and has led the family to question their actions, while also sparking anger from Chicago’s African-American community, which tried to storm the police station. The four officers accused of shooting Reed – one of them a 23-year-old rookie – are on administrative leave for 30 days. (HANDLE).
