The premiere of the play “Shakespeare” by the Baku Municipal Theater took place on the stage of the Azerbaijan State Academic National Drama Theater in Baku, Day.Az reports.

The performance was staged by People’s Artist of Azerbaijan, director Marakhim Farzalibekov based on the play by People’s Writer of Azerbaijan Elchin.

The event was attended by prominent public figures, famous representatives of literature, culture, and numerous fans of theatrical art. The production aroused great public interest; among the spectators were both older generation theatergoers and young people.

It should be noted that the performance was shown live on the Mədəniyyət TV (Culture) channel, which greatly increased the audience.

The production takes place in a psychiatric hospital. The patients of the hospital are people with different problems, stories, and faced with different circumstances. The head physician is trying to help them, who himself needs support, needs someone to whom he could talk…

The stage was decorated interestingly, the main element of the decoration was a large pendulum, counting the fleeting passage of time, as well as large dice, rectangular structures above the stage. At the end, these decorations will play a completely different role, but for now the head doctor is trying to cope with the orderly who was stealing food from the hospital kitchen. Sometimes, when he has a free minute, the head physician plunges into thoughts about life, the essence of this world, the purpose of man… His monologue is the monologue of a lost man, somewhere confused, somewhere scared. But he does not remain in these thoughts for long; one after another, the inhabitants of the hospital enter the office. Among them is a patient who believes that two personalities coexist within her – she and her husband, a “man from Venus”, a woman who imagines herself as Sarah Bernhardt, an alien named Fraction 13 and a patient who decides that he himself is Joseph Stalin.

Fraction 13 talks about life on his planet, everything is different there – people say what they think, and think about what they talk about… He has a warm relationship with “Sarah Bernhardt”. She tells him about Shakespeare, about “Romeo and Juliet”, about her biggest dream – to play Romeo’s beloved, and he tells her about the desire to return to his planet. Conversations about the tragedy created by the English poet subsequently affect all the patients and even the hospital staff. Everyone is imbued with the story of pure love, the philosophy of Shakespeare and walks along the corridors of the hospital with a book by the English poet. But the time has come and Fraction 13 must leave this planet; a flying saucer comes after him, but he promises to return for his friends. Without him, life in the hospital returns to normal. Only the portrait, assembled from game cubes, reminds us of Shakespeare.

Honored Artist of Azerbaijan Husnia Murvatova (Sara Bernar), actors Ilgar Musaev (head doctor), Ulvia Rza (doctor), Elchin Muradov (paramedic), Tural Akhmed (Fraction 13), Zulfiya Gurbanova (husband and wife), Togrul Rza (man from Venus) ), Rashad Kesemenli (Joseph Stalin), Rashid Soltanov (sanitary I), Namig Javadov (sanitary II) created a wonderful acting ensemble.

Ilgar Musaev created the image of a doctor who is not indifferent to the fate of his patients, but despite the fact that he is surrounded by many people, he is deeply lonely. Husniya Murvatova, who often performs dramatic characters on stage, was cheerful, funny, and playful in the role of Sarah Bernhardt. Tural Ahmed was so convincing that many viewers believed in the existence of another planet from where Fraction 13 came.

The audience received the performance with great interest, rewarding the team of the Baku Municipal Theater with deafening applause.

In conclusion, the People’s Writer of Azerbaijan Elchin and the People’s Artist and Director Marakhim Farzalibekov took the stage and thanked the actors for their excellent performance.

It should be noted that the production designer of the performance is Honored Cultural Worker Ilham Askerov, the head of the musical department is Nazim Abidov, and the lighting designer is Tarlan Aleskerli.
