The launch of the powerful Angara A5 spacecraft, designed to carry heavy cargo into low Earth orbit, was canceled two minutes before liftoff, the head of Russia’s Roscosmos space agency said. According to him, this happened due to a suspected software glitch.
Roscosmos chief Yuriy Borisov later told the state-run RIA Novosti news agency that it was “a failure of the engine start control system, most likely a software error.”
The mission planned for Tuesday was already delayed by 24 hours, also at the last minute. Borisov said that the flight was canceled on Tuesday due to a pressure system failure. He said Thursday would be the third attempt to launch a rocket from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Russian Far East.
Last month, Russia also delayed the launch of the Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS) at the last minute. As a result, three flight-ready astronauts from Russia, Belarus, and the United States ascended to the ISS just two days later. Last year, the first Russian mission to the moon in almost 50 years also failed, the lander crashed.
